- It’s a creative designer role hence excellent written and oral communication is not needed. As far as the person is able to understand the requirements it should be fine.
- There are not many creative designers in the team hence there is no need for the candidate to participate in every day meetings, scrum calls, collaborate hence as far as the person is able to communicate with manager, it should be fine.
- Because it’s a isolated role and does not require client, team interaction hence remote work is acceptable as well.
- The role requires highly creative work with precision and the person might need to use many tools, some of which might not be accessible hence a person with 100% vision impairment might not fit but it’s suitable for person with speech and hearing impairment, person with locomotor disability and more.
- Points like these helped to determine the pool which can be focused on.
Team & Manager Sensitization was done as the role was for Full Time Employee hence it was very much needed that person feels part of the team and company.
On-Boarding Process was Made Accessible by following simple steps:
- Hired a Sign Language Interpreter for few key sessions.
- Presentations were provided to the candidate as PDF to go through these and ask any questions in Q&A session which was equipped with Sign Language Interpreter.
Regular Follow-Up Sessions were set up along with interpreter for 3 months since the on-boarding.
Person with 100% Vision Impairment Hired as Colleague Support Engineer in an MNC
Job Analysis helped to determine candidate suitability for the role. For example:
- The role mainly required the person to talk to internal colleagues, employees, raise tickets, understand the challenges which they are facing and assign the ticket to right person/queue/BU. Requires to work with a team, could be in shifts, hand-off could be needed.
- Because the person need to talk to various employees on a daily basis hence good oral communication is must.
- Because the person need raise and respond to tickets raised by employees hence written communication should be good.
- The person mainly need to do desk job hence movement is not a challenge.
- Because the person needs to mostly talk to employees and take care of the tickets, most of the times, it can be done remote as well.
- The person needs to work with other team members hence would need to attend multiple meetings and hand-offs.
- The person mainly need to use outlook, chat application and Helpdesk application. As far as these applications are supported by screen readers, person with 100% vision impairment can do this job well.
- Conclusion was: People with partial or 100% vision impairment, people with locomotor disability should be able to do the job. Person with speech and hearing impairment will not be suitable.
Team & Manager Sensitization was done to make sure the team collaborates well and manager understands accessibility requirements of the person.
Buddy was assigned to the person to help navigate in office or applications as needed.
