  • Focus on adding roles and responsibilities which you have done than elaborating only projects.
  • If you don’t have experience, add internship projects along with your role & learning.
  • If you don’t have internship experience as well, you must do some real-time projects on your own and add the same. For example:
      • Create a Mobile App
      • Create a blog

      • Create small applications
      • Apply digital marketing on your blog/website, practice analytics etc.

  • Projects, experience related to the job can be added first. These can be highlighted and can be added in detail compare to other ones.
  • Use the keywords mentioned in Job Description in your resume. Sometime resumes are scanned automatically based on the keywords.

Core Skills Section

  • There are 2 types of skills: Hard Skill and Soft Skills.
  • Let’s learn about Soft Skills first.
    • There are many soft skills, you should only mention the ones which you truly have and provide examples for.
    • Some key must desire soft-skills are good communication, problem-solving, teamwork, time management etc.
    • You can practice some of these skills even during training. For example: During training, take up a project where you work like a project in a company where you learn teamwork, time management & problem solving etc.
  • Now let’s check hard skills section.
    • Hard Skills refers to core technical knowledge. If you are software developer then programming is core hard skill. If you are physiotherapist then physiotherapy is core hard skill and so on.
    • Here you should mention all key skills which you are confident on.
    • You must do hands-on projects using these skills.
    • Please don’t mention any skills which you might have learnt long back and don’t remember.
    • You must categorize different hard skills, for example: Programming Languages, Collaborations Tools, Design Principles, Project Management etc.
    • You should try to read, acquire related skills which helps employer decide. For example: if you are a front end or backend developer, you should know about collaboration tools JIRA or similar tools, agile methodology, DevOps concepts, build & release concepts. You can also learn about project management process. Knowing these concepts will reduce the ramp-up and onboarding time for you hence employer might prefer your candidature.

Training & Certifications Section

  • This section must be added unless you have absolutely no training and certification.
  • On the other side, you should not attend any training which comes your way and mention that.
  • Attending and mentioning any training confuses the employer what’s you real interest, they think that you are confused and don’t know what you want to do.
  • However, you can explore to do related trainings. For example: If you aspire to be Full Stack Developer and getting trained on React JS, you can attend Node JS, JAVA, J2EE, Spring as well.
  • Please attend additional training once you are good at one. Please understand that just attending the training is not enough but you should be good at it, do some hands-on exercises, some projects and be confident at it.
  • If you did some trainings very long ago and don’t remember any concepts, then there is no use of mentioning that. Remember unless you know the concepts, can answer the questions, can handle the issues in that area just mentioning the training is not enough.
  • Also, you can do certifications to prove your point but just doing any certification won’t do. You must identify a well recognized certification in the industry. There might not be free ones, but you should see if something is worth investing. In Digital Marketing field, Google Certifications are worth trying.

References are Definitely Good

  • References are a great way to make you resume stand-out from others.
  • Please do not provide name of the organization as reference but of the people you have worked with.
  • As a fresher, you can provide the reference of the trainers who trained you.
  • Please do not provide references of friends, ideally these should be senior to you.
  • Please keep changing the references as you move from in different organizations. Always keep the references updated.
  • Before adding the reference, please make sure you connect with them to give heads-up that they might receive a call.
  • If reference contacts are available at any specific time, please do mention the same.
  • Always provide correct contact number/email address of the references.
  • It is best to provide LinkedIn profile link of the reference as well.
  • You can use below format to provide references
    • <Full Name>-<Designation>-<Company>-<LinkedIn Profile URL>
    • <Number to Call>-<WhatsApp/Call/Chat>-<Availability Time>-<Email Id>

  • This section is optional but if added, it really certifies and puts you away from crowd.
  • Here you can add the awards even if these are in school, college, during training or even in any internship. Awards showcase that how you go above and beyond to achieve something and attitude matters.
  • Example: If you have received best trainee award etc.

For People with Disability - Accommodations Needed

It is best to add any accommodations needed for people with disability.

    • People might debate on this that as soon as the employer sees person with disability, resume will not be shortlisted.
    • If the employer does not want to hire disabled, it will eventually be rejected.
    • There are greater chances when you mention that you are very well aware about challenges and offering various solutions which will not only help the employer hire and work with you but many such other profiles as well.
    • Employer can also see you as “Problem Solver” in any situation and you have higher chances of getting onboarded.
    • Below are some examples of accommodations needed.
      • Online Aptitude/Coding/Other Tests
        • If needed, mention that you need the products and tools to be used should be accessible
        • If needed, mention that you need screen reader software like NVDA or JAWS
      • In-Person Rounds
        • If needed, mention that you would prefer interview over video calls
      • Tech or Any Other Conversation Rounds
        • If needed, mention that you must need caption to be enabled
        • If needed, mention that you need a sign language interpreter
      • Preferred Contact Medium
        • If needed, mention that you are available only via chat/messages & no calls
        • If needed, mention that you are available only via calls no chat/messages
    • Knowing PwD, employers might assume that you need certain accommodations hence it would be good to mention something which you do not need. For example: If you are a person with vision impairment, employer might think that you cannot travel alone.
    • Example of Accommodation Section:
      • For Travel – No Accommodations Needed, Available to Travel to Office Everyday

      • During Interviews – None for Oral Interviews, None for Breast Examination, Need Screen Reader for Test on Computers

      • During On-Boarding/On-Job – Screen Reader for Computer Related Work.

      • Work Options –  Open for in office or remote. Open for different roles as well.

      • Screen Readers –  I can work with both NVIDA and JAWS. NVIDA is Free and JAWS is Licensed.

Education Section

  • Generally, here people mention about 10, 12, Graduation and much more along with year, school/college, percentage etc. which is at times not needed.
  • Unless it’s entrance exam where its all percentages are must and will be considered, it’s not needed to take a lot of space in one page resume for all above details.
  • Ideally experience, hands-on projects should be given more space in the resume. If all your %s are very good and if you would like to mention, you can use below suggested format to present all key education in less space
    BA – History, Economics, Kannada – University of Bangalore – 2018 – 60%
    PUC – History, Economics, Political Science, Sociology – 2016 – 64%
    SSLC – English, Hindi, Economics, Political Science – 2013 – 78%
  • Also, if you have done any diploma or other course which is more relevant to the job you are applying for, that’s more appropriate.
